About Anchorage Fire Department

Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) is an all-hazards prevention, education, and emergency response agency serving the Municipality of Anchorage. It traces its roots to 1915, became a fully paid department in 1967 when seven volunteer companies unified, and added paramedic service in 1971. The 1975 merger with the Greater Anchorage Borough created the modern citywide department.

Today AFD operates 13 fire stations. Fire response covers the 166-square-mile Anchorage bowl and Eagle River area, while EMS coverage stretches across all 1,961 square miles of the municipality. The department fields engines, ladder trucks, medic units, and specialized rescue and hazmat resources.

AFD holds an ISO Class 1 rating and cites one of the highest cardiac arrest survival rates in the country, reflecting a strong integrated EMS and paramedic system alongside traditional fire suppression.
