Department careers page ↗Flagstaff Fire Department traces its roots to 1882 and today operates six fire stations across the city, providing fire suppression, EMS, wildland fire management, and technical rescue services. Each shift fields up to 30 firefighters across three rotating platoons (A, B, C), with minimum staffing of a captain, engineer, and one to two firefighters per station, plus at least seven on-duty paramedics; every crew member is cross-trained as an EMT.
Given Flagstaff's setting in the ponderosa pine forests of northern Arizona, the department maintains a dedicated Wildfire Management Division with full-time and seasonal staff handling mitigation work such as selective tree thinning, brush disposal, and prescribed fire. The department also fields specialty assignments in technical rescue, hazardous materials, cold-water rescue, fire investigation, and a SWAT paramedic program, along with a Critical Incident Stress Management/peer support team.
The department has built out its own mentorship pipeline for aspiring firefighters, the House of Jacks program, which pairs candidates with current and retired members for physical, mental, and cultural preparation ahead of hiring processes.
MissionThe mission of the City of Flagstaff is to protect and enhance the quality of life for all.
