About Rural Metro Fire Department

Rural Metro Fire is a private fire protection company founded in Arizona in 1948 by Lou Witzeman, then a 22-year-old journalist who began with a single truck and a modest station of used equipment. Over the following decades it grew by contracting to protect communities that municipal departments did not cover, expanding into Scottsdale, Pima County, Yuma County, and eventually beyond Arizona.

Today the organization operates more than 42 stations, employs over 1,000 people, and runs a fleet of more than 100 fire apparatus. In Arizona it serves unincorporated areas of Pima, Maricopa/Pinal, and Yuma Counties, with additional operations in Tennessee (Knox County) and Oregon (Josephine County).

Beyond structure fire suppression, Rural Metro provides emergency medical response, vehicle rescue, aircraft rescue firefighting (ARFF), industrial fire protection, and wildland fire services. It is part of Global Medical Response.

The company is distinctive as one of the country's oldest and largest private-enterprise fire services, an alternative model to the traditional municipal fire department.
