Department careers page ↗Summit Fire & Medical District traces its roots to 1973, when Doney Park Fire District formed as the first predominantly career fire department in rural Flagstaff; a volunteer-staffed Timberline-Fernwood Fire District followed in 1977. The two agencies merged in 2001 to create Summit Fire & Medical District, and the district grew again in 2006 when it took on service for the Fort Valley area, expanding coverage to roughly 95 square miles around Doney Park, Timberline-Fernwood, Cosnino, and Fort Valley.
Today SFMD runs three stations plus an in-district apparatus maintenance shop, each station staffing a Type 1 engine and a Type 3 wildland engine with a minimum crew of a firefighter, an engineer, and a paramedic-certified captain working a 48/96 schedule across three shifts. Since a former fire chief's retirement, the district has shared its fire chief and three deputy chiefs with the City of Flagstaff under an intergovernmental agreement that has since been extended.
Because the district sits in wildland-urban interface terrain, crews regularly deploy nationwide on multi-week wildland fire assignments alongside their structural and EMS response duties. Patient transport is handled by partner agency Guardian Medical Transport, and SFMD maintains automatic aid with Greater Flagstaff Regional.
SFMD is a full-time, career-only fire district staffing three Type-1 engines out of three stations on a 48/96 schedule. Every engine carries a minimum of three firefighters, including a ranked or acting engineer and captain, with at least one member certified as a paramedic. The district is currently recruiting for both entry-level firefighter positions and its next Fire Chief.
