About City Of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue, and hazard prevention across the City of San Diego. With roughly 949 uniformed firefighting personnel working from 52 fire stations, it is one of California's largest municipal fire agencies.

What sets SDFD apart is its integrated Lifeguard Service. Alongside its firefighters, the department staffs 98 permanent lifeguards (plus seasonal staff) across 9 permanent lifeguard stations, protecting 17 miles of coastline that extend three miles offshore and the 4,600-acre Mission Bay Park.

The department serves a population of nearly 1.42 million people over a 343-square-mile service area, supported by 246 civilian staff. Its work spans EMS, fire inspections and permits, a HazMat team, community risk reduction, wildfire preparedness, and emergency management.
