Department careers page ↗Clovis Fire Department traces its roots to 1892, when sawmill employees organized a volunteer brigade to protect the mill from fire. After Clovis incorporated in 1912 the city adopted its first fire protection ordinance, and in 1917 the volunteer effort was formalized into the Clovis Fire Department. The department became a fully professional, paid organization in 1966 when the city hired its first full-time Fire Chief and five firefighters.
Today the department protects roughly 123,665 residents across 26 square miles from stations across the city, and holds an ISO Class 2 rating. It is organized into Emergency Operations, Community Risk Reduction, and Administration divisions under a Command Staff of chief officers, and each of its three daily shifts is staffed with a Battalion Chief, six Captains, six Engineers, and six Firefighters.
Beyond structural firefighting and EMS first response, Clovis maintains specialized capabilities including a 12-person Hazardous Materials Response Team with California Type 1 certification and a 12-person Urban Search and Rescue team trained in high-angle rope, confined space, swift water, trench, and mass transportation rescue. The department also deploys wildland strike teams regionally during fire season and provides fire prevention, public education, and youth programs including Explorer Post 330.
