About Cosumnes Fire Department

Cosumnes Fire Department provides fire suppression, prevention, and paramedic-level emergency medical services across more than 157 square miles of Elk Grove, Galt, and the surrounding South Sacramento County area, serving a population of over 214,000. The department's roots go back to 1893, when a devastating string of Main Street fires led residents to organize the volunteer Elk Grove Fire Department; a separate all-volunteer Galt Fire Protection District followed in 1921. The two lineages combined in stages, first when Elk Grove Fire joined the Elk Grove Parks and Recreation District in 1985 to form the Elk Grove Community Services District, and then in 2006 when that district's fire operations merged with Galt's to create the present-day Cosumnes Community Services District.

Today the department is organized into Operations and Administration & Support Services branches, with divisions covering Emergency Medical Services, Fire Prevention, and Training & Special Operations, plus fleet maintenance and support services. Beyond emergency response, the department runs fire prevention plan review and inspections, an annual weed-abatement campaign, permitting for special events, and community programs including school visits and station tours. In 2025 the department achieved Accredited Agency status through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International.

MissionSaves lives and protects the community through prevention, preparedness, and emergency response in a timely, courteous, and effective manner.
