About Georgetown Fire Department

Georgetown Fire Protection District traces its roots to 1854, when local citizens formed the Mountaineer Hook and Ladder Company, an informally organized fire brigade. The district was formally incorporated as a governmental agency in 1938, and by 1939 had purchased its first new engine, a Studebaker, which volunteer firefighters later restored in 2000.

Today the district covers about 96 square miles and roughly 2,330 properties, serving a resident population of about 6,500 people. Its jurisdiction includes a general aviation airport, a water treatment facility, and two propane distribution plants, along with several local schools, all of which factor into district planning and response.

The department is headquartered at Station 61 in Georgetown, which is staffed around the clock, and is supported by four satellite volunteer stations spread across the district, including one operated jointly with the US Forest Service. Day-to-day operations rely on a full-time chief, an administrative assistant, two full-time firefighter-EMTs, a part-time equipment mechanic, and a roster of about 30 volunteer firefighters.
