Department careers page ↗Heartland Fire & Rescue was formed on January 1, 2010, when the cities of El Cajon, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove combined their fire departments under a joint powers agreement, sharing a single management structure to reduce redundancy while keeping each city's local oversight. The consolidated agency now operates eight fire stations staffed by roughly 130 personnel, running nine Advanced Life Support engine companies, two ALS truck companies, an Urban Search & Rescue unit, an ALS squad, and a Battalion Chief unit.
Together the three member cities represent more than 192,000 residents, and the department responds to over 30,000 emergency calls a year covering fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical response, and community emergency preparedness. Ambulance transport within the jurisdiction is provided under contract by American Medical Response. The agency holds an ISO Class 1 rating, the highest fire-protection classification available.
Because Heartland is a shared-services agency, firefighter and paramedic hiring is handled individually by each member city rather than through a single centralized Heartland application; the department's own site points applicants to the El Cajon, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove employment pages and offers a Reserve Firefighter and unpaid internship pathway alongside its volunteer CERT program.
MissionTo provide safe communities through exceptional, professional service.
Heartland Fire & Rescue does not run a single unified hiring process; firefighter/paramedic positions are recruited separately by each of its three member cities (El Cajon, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove). The department's Jobs page notes there were no active recruitments at the time of review and directs candidates to each city's job-notification service so they're alerted when Firefighter/Paramedic openings post. A Reserve Firefighter Program and an unpaid Internship Program offer additional pathways to gain experience, alongside the volunteer Fire Explorer program for younger applicants.
