Department careers page ↗Formed in 1996 when the Livermore Fire Department and Pleasanton Fire Department merged into a Joint Powers Authority (JPA), LPFD unites the two cities' fire resources under shared administration overseen by a JPA Board of Directors drawn from both city councils. The department is an "all-risk" agency, meaning its firefighter/paramedics and EMTs handle fire suppression, advanced and basic life support medical response, technical and water rescue, hazardous materials incidents, and public assistance calls across both jurisdictions.
LPFD runs ten fire stations (five in Pleasanton, five in Livermore) plus an administrative headquarters and a dedicated training center, and pairs its emergency operations with fire prevention services including plan review, inspections, permitting, and vegetation management. The department is also home to Livermore's Centennial Light Bulb, a lightbulb at Fire Station 6 that has burned continuously for over a century.
MissionTo provide exceptional public safety services that enhance the quality of life in our communities by protecting life, property, and the environment.
LPFD hires full-time firefighters who provide fire suppression, EMS, rescue, and community-education services across Livermore and Pleasanton, with additional volunteer/part-time pathways through its Reserve Firefighter and Explorer programs and support roles as Fire & Hazmat Inspectors.
