Department careers page ↗The Pasadena Fire Department was formally established on October 8, 1887, after a 1885 laundry fire on Fair Oaks and Mills Alley convinced civic leaders the growing city needed organized fire protection. Early milestones include the department's first apparatus (a hook-and-ladder rig and hose cart built by the city blacksmith shop) entering service in 1888, its first permanent station on Dayton Street in 1889, and a 1909 Seagrave chemical engine that was reportedly the first motorized fire apparatus on the Pacific Coast. In 1919 Pasadena became the first city to conduct an aerial survey for fire-protection planning, and in 1972 James Shern became the first Black fire chief of a major California city.
Today the department is organized into Fire Administration, Community Risk Reduction/Fire Prevention (which includes fire engineering, inspection services, hazardous materials, and fire investigation), Fire Operations (including Emergency Medical Services), and Disaster Preparedness. It operates out of eight fire stations across the city and fields a workforce of 192.5 full-time positions, with 170 assigned to 24-hour shift operations and 22.5 in administrative roles. All Pasadena firefighters are certified EMTs, and the department also administers a paramedic subscription program for residents.
