Pioneer Fire Protection District

Pioneer Fire Protection District is a special district government agency serving Somerset, California and the surrounding Mt Aukum Road area from its headquarters, Station 38, at 7061 Mt Aukum Rd. As a special district, the district describes itself as operating as "the most local form of local government," governed by an elected Board of Directors that holds regular public meetings and posts financial and operational documents online.

The district's services extend beyond emergency response to include fire prevention education, home fire safety guidance, and administration of burn permits, residential and commercial building permits, business licenses, and vacation home rental permits. It also runs a Defensible Space Assistance Program aimed at seniors, veterans, and low-income residents, along with a vegetation chipping program and sand/sandbag distribution to help residents in this wildfire-prone foothill community reduce fuel loads and prepare for emergencies.

Pioneer Fire operates with a small administrative staff supporting a largely volunteer firefighting force, and the district is currently engaged in an active volunteer firefighter recruitment drive to fill both stipended and non-stipended volunteer roles.

Pioneer Fire Protection District is actively recruiting for volunteer and volunteer-stipend positions, including Shift Firefighter-EMT/Paramedic, EMS Quick Response Team members, Wildland/Vegetation Firefighters, Water Tender/Apparatus Operators, and Reserve Volunteers. The district describes the volunteer role as requiring "courage, dedication, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn new skills."
