Department careers page ↗Santa Fe Springs Fire-Rescue was formed in 1958, about a year after the city's 1957 incorporation, starting as a roughly 30-person department running borrowed apparatus out of vacant buildings. Stations 4, 2, 3, and 1 were built in turn between 1959 and 1971, and all four remain in service today, now supporting a department of 47 firefighters plus fire prevention, environmental protection, mechanic, and administrative staff.
The department is organized into Operations, Fire Prevention, and Environmental Protection divisions, covering roughly 9 square miles of the city. Operations crews respond to about 3,400 calls a year, targeting a five-minute arrival time on 90% of responses, with three engine companies, one truck company, and a battalion chief unit on duty daily across three rotating shifts (A, B, C).
Medical calls make up about 85% of the department's response volume. Santa Fe Springs has provided its own paramedic service since 1974 and, as of April 2026, runs two four-person paramedic fire engines staffed by firefighter/paramedics certified through California and Los Angeles County EMS. Ambulance transport itself is handled by Falck Ambulance under a separate county contract. Beyond EMS, the department maintains hazardous materials, urban search and rescue, and wildland firefighting capability, and its Fire Prevention division runs code enforcement, plan checking, inspections, and public education out of a separate Telegraph Road office.
