About Castle Rock Fire & Rescue Department

Castle Rock Fire and Rescue Department (CRFD) traces its roots to 1892, when the town's mayor bought 300 feet of hose for a homemade cart; the department was formally chartered on February 2, 1915 with 16 members under founding Chief U.S. Sturdevant. What began as a small volunteer company protecting a handful of ranches around Castle Rock, Sedalia, and Larkspur has grown into a career department covering the Town of Castle Rock (36.57 square miles) and the surrounding Castle Rock Fire Protection District (32 square miles).

Today CRFD runs five operational stations along the Front Range corridor south of Denver, with a sixth station under construction and slated to open in 2027. Crews respond to structure fires, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescues, and wildland fires, and every apparatus carries at least one paramedic. The department earned an ISO Class 2 rating in 2021, up from a Class 5 rating in the 1990s, reflecting sustained investment in water supply, training, and communications infrastructure.

CRFD is organized into Administrative Services, Operations, Fire and Life Safety, Training, and Logistics divisions, and fields specialty capabilities including a Wildland Team, a hazmat unit, and technical rescue (trench, confined space, rope, and structural collapse) response, alongside membership in the regional Colorado Task Force 1 program.

MissionHigh customer satisfaction through quality preparation and excellent service.
