Department careers page ↗Evergreen Fire Protection District was formed in 1948 after a community meeting at the local schoolhouse, where residents pooled money to buy a pump, hose, and a Dodge power wagon and built the first firehouse on Main Street. The district's ambulance service traces to 1952, when a delayed response from Denver prompted locals to convert a station wagon into an ambulance; that service merged with the fire department's rescue squad in 1986 and became a fully integrated EMS division with paid EMTs in 1987.
Today the district operates 8 fire stations across more than 120 square miles, protecting nearly 26,000 residents in unincorporated parts of Jefferson, Clear Creek, and Park counties, plus portions of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. It is organized into five divisions -- Administration, Fire Operations, Emergency Medical Services, Fire Prevention/Risk Reduction, and Maintenance/Fleet -- and describes itself as one of the largest volunteer fire departments in Colorado, blending career staff with volunteer firefighters, medical-technician reserves, and a fire auxiliary support group.
Beyond structural and wildland fire response and EMS transport, the district runs community programs including CPR/AED classes, car-seat inspections, home safety assessments, fall-prevention home visits, hazardous-waste and prescription drug disposal, and a wildfire mitigation chipping program for residents in the fire-prone foothills.
