Department careers page ↗Hartsel Fire Protection District traces its roots to 1956, when five Hartsel residents banded together to form a volunteer fire department. In 1970 the group formally incorporated as the Hartsel Fire Protection District under Colorado's special district laws, giving it a dedicated tax base and governance structure to match its growing coverage area.
Today the district blends a small career staff with volunteer firefighters to protect a sprawling, sparsely populated stretch of South Park, from Wilkerson Pass to Trout Creek Pass along the Highway 9 corridor. Crews are cross-trained in fire suppression, rescue and vehicle extrication, hazardous materials response, and emergency medical care, and the district runs an active wildfire-mitigation program of its own, including burn permits, seasonal burn bans, and a community chipping program.
Headquarters sits at 131 Elm St in Hartsel, alongside a separate training/apparatus facility, with outlying stations reaching remote subdivisions such as Ranch of the Rockies, South Park Ranches, Hartsel Ranches, Badger Creek Ranch, and Wildwood. A locally elected five-member Board of Directors oversees the district's governance and finances.
