About Longmont Fire Department

Longmont Fire Services is a division of the City of Longmont Public Safety department, which also includes Police Services and Collaborative Services under a unified command structure. The division is organized into two major sections, Operations and Codes and Planning, and its personnel handle fire suppression, hazardous materials incidents, emergency medical response, and technical rescue.

The division is led by Fire Chief Dan Higgins, supported by Deputy Chief Scott Opie and Fire Marshal/Battalion Chief Jason O'Donnell. Longmont Public Safety holds CALEA accreditation, and the Fire Services Division improved its ISO Public Protection Classification to Class 02, effective June 1, 2025, reflecting strong fire suppression capability for the community it serves.

Beyond emergency response, the division runs community risk-reduction programs including smoke alarm distribution, carbon monoxide safety education, children's fire safety education, and fire code enforcement, coordinated through its Codes and Planning section.

Entry Level hires attend a 14-16 week Firefighter Academy before shift assignment, followed by a one-year probationary period with placement at Step 2 upon completion. Lateral Entry hires are assigned to a shift as an additional crew member pending supervisor approval, also with a one-year probationary period, with placement at Step 4 upon completion.
