About South Adams County Fire Protection District #4

South Adams County Fire traces back to February 1942, when a wartime civil-defense group organized as an all-volunteer fire brigade funded by community fundraising. In 1952 the volunteers were formalized into a taxing special district, and the department gradually professionalized over the following decades, becoming a combination department blending career and reserve firefighters in 2013 and standing up its own 501(c)(3) firefighters association the same year. The department moved into its current Syracuse Street headquarters in 2017, named for founding Fire Chief Carl Horbitt.

Today SACFD covers about 68.78 square miles of Commerce City and unincorporated Adams County - a mix of residential neighborhoods, commercial corridors, heavy industry, major highways, and Colorado's only oil refinery - out of six fire stations. Call volume has grown roughly 9% a year since 2014, reaching 11,754 responses in 2024 with an average response time of about 7 minutes 33 seconds. The department earned an ISO Class 2/2x rating in 2016, placing it among roughly the top 2.5% of fire agencies nationwide.

Operations are organized into Chief Staff, Administration, Fire Prevention, Training, EMS, and Fleet-Facility Maintenance divisions, with medical transport handled through a partnership with Platte Valley Ambulance. The department also runs public-facing programs including fire and life-safety education, car seat inspections, and station tours.

Missiondedicated to serving our community and all who live in or travel through our district with integrity, professionalism, and care, aiming to set the standard in fire safety and emergency response through innovation and community partnership
