About Summit Fire & EMS Protection District

Summit Fire & EMS is the product of decades of consolidation among the small volunteer and career departments that once protected Colorado's Summit County independently. Beginning with the Dillon Valley Metro District in 1971 and continuing through the formation of Frisco, Silverthorne, Snake River and Dillon fire protection districts, the agencies gradually merged — first into the Lake Dillon Fire Authority in the 1990s, then joining with Copper Mountain in 2018 to form Summit Fire & EMS, and finally absorbing Summit County Ambulance Service in 2020 to bring fire and EMS transport under one roof.

Today the district runs five 24-hour stations plus a dedicated wildfire base, staffed by 100 career employees who respond to structure fires, medical emergencies, backcountry and mountain rescues, and wildland fire across roughly 185 square miles of fire-protection-district boundary (about 479 square miles including the unincorporated and federal land it also covers). Serving a mountain resort community, the district protects an estimated 23,000 year-round residents alongside a seasonal population that swells past 150,000 during ski and summer visitor peaks.

The department is organized into Operations, Community Risk, and Administration divisions, with a standalone Wildland Division handling fuels reduction, defensible-space work, and initial-attack wildfire response — a reflection of the district's high-country wildfire exposure.

MissionDedicated and compassionate professionals providing all-hazards solutions to the community through education, prevention, and response.
