Department careers page ↗Windsor Severance Fire Rescue traces its roots to May 12, 1902, when the Windsor Fire Department began with little more than 550 feet of hose, a nozzle, a couple of axes, and buckets. Over more than a century the department grew from an all-volunteer outfit into a fully career agency, and today it operates as an independent Colorado Title 32 special district governed by an elected five-member Board of Directors.
WSFR now runs four fire stations around the clock across its 100-square-mile service area in Windsor and Severance, staffed by more than 80 uniformed and civilian personnel organized into Operations, Community Risk Reduction, and Administration divisions. Line firefighters work 48-hours-on, 96-hours-off shifts across three battalions, with each first-due engine staffed by a minimum of three firefighters and up to four, backed by three continuously staffed ambulances through a contracted EMS provider.
The district has invested heavily in improving its fire protection capability, lowering its ISO Public Protection Classification from a 4 to a 2 in 2016, and earning international accreditation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence in March 2018, which it successfully renewed in March 2023. WSFR also operates one of the few dedicated fire museums in Colorado, reflecting the department's long community history alongside its modern emergency response mission.
