About City Of Meriden, Department Of Fire And Emergency Services

The Meriden Department of Fire and Emergency Services traces its roots to 1851, when the city's first company organized in West Meriden near the railroad line. As Meriden industrialized through the 19th century, additional companies were chartered across the growing city, and by 1914 Meriden had become the first fully mechanized fire department in Connecticut. The department expanded its mission over the decades, adding fire prevention education in schools as early as 1915 and building out emergency medical response capability beginning in the 1940s.

Today the department operates out of six stations, including a headquarters at 561 Broad Street that was substantially renovated and expanded in 1996-97, and fields 103 personnel — 100 of them sworn firefighters — organized into Administration, Operations, the Fire Marshal's Office, and Training divisions. The Operations division runs four platoons of 23 personnel each, keeping a minimum daily staffing of 22 firefighters on duty across the city.

Beyond structural firefighting, Meriden firefighters handle fire prevention and public education, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, and emergency medical services, all guided by core values of professionalism, respect, integrity, dedication, and excellence.

MissionTo deliver the best fire and emergency protective services to benefit the quality of life for the citizens and visitor of our community.
