About Fairfield Fire Department

Fairfield Fire Department is the career fire service for the Town of Fairfield, a coastal Fairfield County community on Connecticut's Long Island Sound shoreline. The department operates from five fire stations, including headquarters at 140 Reef Road, staffing five engine companies, one ladder company, and one rescue company under a shift commander, with about 94 uniformed staff and suppression personnel covering roughly 32 square miles of residential, commercial, and industrial area, more than five miles of coastline, and two college campuses.

Beyond structural firefighting, FFD is a founding member of the Fairfield County Hazardous Materials Response Team and maintains in-house hazmat capability rather than contracting it out. Crews also train in Special Operations ("SPECOPS"), including confined-space and other technical rescue disciplines, and the department fields marine/dive assets to cover its shoreline exposure. The department is designated by the Connecticut Department of Emergency Medical Services as the town's Emergency First Responder agency, with personnel trained to First Responder level including defibrillation and medication administration.

The Fire Marshal's Office, based on the second floor of headquarters, handles fire code enforcement, inspections, permitting, and fire investigation for the town. Firefighter hiring runs through the Connecticut Firefighter Testing Consortium, which lets a single application and written exam reach multiple participating Connecticut departments at once.

How to get hired

Fairfield hires firefighters through the Connecticut Firefighter Testing Consortium, a shared testing process that lets one application and written exam apply to multiple participating CT departments, including both entry-level and lateral-entry firefighter/paramedic or EMT candidates. Fairfield generally joins this consortium cycle roughly every two years to build its hiring eligibility list.
