About New Britain Fire Department

The New Britain Fire Department traces its roots to 1833, when it began as a volunteer bucket-brigade organization using hand-drawn carriages and ladders. In 1873, fifty years after its founding, the department transitioned to a professional paid force of 92 firefighters organized into hose, hook & ladder, and on-call special companies.

Today NBFD operates eight companies -- six engines and two ladder trucks -- staffed by 130 personnel across six stations, protecting a population of about 73,000 across 13.4 square miles. Call volume has trended upward in recent years, rising from 6,129 calls in 2016 to 7,321 calls in 2019.

The department's administration includes a fire chief, a fire marshal, four shift-commanding deputy chiefs (Groups A through D), and a deputy chief of training, reflecting a platoon-based staffing structure across the city's stations.
