Department careers page ↗The Tolland Fire Department, Inc. has protected the Town of Tolland since 1933, growing from an all-volunteer bucket brigade into a combination department staffed by a small career team of firefighter/EMTs alongside a larger corps of volunteers. Members respond to structure fires, vehicle accidents, hazardous conditions, storms, and medical emergencies across the town.
Beyond emergency response, the department maintains an active volunteer pipeline built around its Merrow Road training center, welcoming residents with no prior firefighting or EMS background, including a dedicated recruitment track for UConn students living nearby. Firefighting, EMS, Fire Police, and Auxiliary/support roles all funnel new members through the same door-open, walk-in-friendly recruiting approach that has kept the department volunteer-heavy even as call demand has grown.
Tolland Fire is primarily a volunteer recruitment pipeline: the department accepts applicants for Firefighting, EMS, Fire Police, and Auxiliary/Support roles with no prior experience required, providing training and gear at no cost to the member.
