About Key West Fire Department

Key West Fire Department (KWFD) protects the southernmost city in the continental United States, running a combined fire-suppression and emergency medical services operation out of stations spread across the island, plus an unmanned auxiliary station on Sunset Key. The department traces its roots to the Lafayette Fire Company, a volunteer outfit organized in 1834, before Key West formally stood up its own fire department in 1875 - a lineage that includes surviving the Great Fire of 1886, which destroyed 18 cigar factories and over 600 buildings across Old Town.

Today KWFD firefighters work 24-hour shifts on a 24/48 rotation split across three color-coded watches, responding not just to structure fires but to medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and water rescues through the department's dive team. In 2016 the department earned an ISO Class 1 rating, a distinction held by fewer than 1% of U.S. fire departments and one that helps lower homeowners' insurance costs across the city.

MissionWe strive daily to provide the best medical service, fire suppression response, and fire prevention enforcement we can, both on land and on the water, to enhance the quality of life and safety here in Key West.
