Department careers page ↗The Melbourne Fire Department provides fire suppression, hazard mitigation, and advanced life support emergency medical care across the City of Melbourne, Florida. All of its stations are licensed for advanced life support and staffed by paramedics, and the department's Fire Prevention Office handles inspections, fire code enforcement, investigations, and community life-safety education.
Effective November 1, 2022, Melbourne became a designated ISO Class 1 department — the first fire department in Brevard County to earn that rating, placing it in the top 1% of departments nationally and the top 10% in Florida. The department also participates in the Brevard County Mutual Aid program and the Statewide Emergency Response agreement, allowing it to draw on (and provide) resources across jurisdictional lines during major incidents.
New firefighters train at the Melbourne Fire Training Center on Hughes Road, which has a classroom and burn tower used for search and rescue, vehicle extrication, pump operations, ladders, tools and ropes, CPR, advanced airway, and emergency vehicle driving instruction.
Firefighter candidates must meet Florida's minimum certification standards (F.S. 633.34-633.35) and go through a multi-stage testing process: a written exam, a physical abilities test at the Fire Training Center, a medical scenario evaluation, and an interview.
