About Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) traces its roots to a single-unit fire patrol formed in 1935. Between 1968 and 1978, fifteen municipal fire departments merged into the county department, leaving only Hialeah, Coral Gables, Miami Beach and the City of Miami to run their own fire services. Today MDFR covers a response territory of roughly 1,900 square miles.

The department is staffed by nearly 2,800 employees, including more than 2,200 uniformed firefighters cross-trained in fire suppression and emergency medical response. It operates 71 fire-rescue stations serving unincorporated Miami-Dade plus 29 municipalities.

Serving a resident population of more than 1.9 million, MDFR answers over 250,000 calls for assistance each year, ranking it among the busiest and largest fire departments in the country. Beyond front-line response, the department runs specialized teams and coordinates the County's Emergency Operations Center.

MissionWe protect people, property and the environment by providing proactive responsive professional and humanitarian fire rescue services essential to public health, safety and well-being.
