About Miami Fire-Rescue

Miami Fire-Rescue serves the City of Miami, Florida, delivering fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical care, disaster management, and fire prevention. The department was established on July 17, 1898 as a volunteer unit under the city's first fire chief, Charles H. Garthside, and grew into a fully professional force by the mid-1910s.

Today the department is budgeted for roughly 907 full-time personnel organized across three districts, with about 15 fire stations plus a training center. Its fleet includes engines, ladder trucks, quints, ALS rescue units, HazMat and USAR apparatus, and fireboats for waterfront and port response.

The department handles well over 100,000 emergency calls a year and is nationally notable as an innovator: it was the first in the country to equip all of its apparatus with two-way radios and an early adopter of fog-nozzle firefighting. It sponsors Florida (USAR) Task Force 2, a heavy urban search and rescue team deployed to major national and international disasters.

MissionTo provide effective and efficient fire prevention, fire suppression, disaster management, emergency medical care and other essential services to save lives and protect property.
