About Monroe County Fire Rescue

Monroe County Fire Rescue (MCFR) serves the unincorporated communities of the Florida Keys, stretching from Stock Island and Key West International Airport up through the island chain to Tavernier. The department operates nine fire stations distributed along the Overseas Highway, giving it an unusually linear, island-based coverage area.

MCFR is a combined fire and EMS agency staffed by state-certified firefighters cross-trained as EMTs and paramedics. Crews deliver both advanced and basic life support, and the department co-operates the Trauma Star air ambulance service with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office for critical ground and air medical transport.

The department also runs the Joe London Fire Training Facility on Crawl Key, one of only 43 certified firefighting training centers in Florida, which trains MCFR personnel alongside local volunteer and municipal Keys firefighters. Stations in the unincorporated areas carry an ISO Public Protection Classification of 3.

How to get hired

Monroe County Fire Rescue positions are posted through the Monroe County government careers portal on Workday. Because MCFR is a combined fire-EMS agency, firefighters are expected to be dual-certified, holding both Florida firefighter certification and EMT or paramedic credentials.

The department's Joe London Fire Training Facility on Crawl Key delivers Firefighter I & II (235 hours each), fire officer, EMT, and paramedic training, primarily for MCFR firefighters and local Keys departments. Prospective candidates interested in the academy or employment are directed to contact the department.
