Department careers page ↗The Niceville Fire Department traces its roots to 1952, when a group of volunteers known locally as the "Smoke Eaters" began providing fire protection to the growing community. The department was formally established as a city agency under Ordinance No. 165 on August 21, 1962, and has since grown into a modern, professional career fire service.
Today the department serves more than 16,000 residents within Niceville's incorporated city limits, providing emergency response, fire prevention and public safety education, and fire code inspections. The department's ISO Class 2 rating reflects a strong level of fire suppression capability and infrastructure relative to national standards.
The department is led by Fire Chief Alex Kukulus, who assumed the role in 2025, supported by Fire Marshal Matt Webster and Administrative Assistant Ryann Lesieur. The department maintains its own Facebook presence separate from the city's general social media accounts.
