Department careers page ↗Athens-Clarke County Fire Department traces its roots to the volunteer Athens Fire Company No. 1, chartered in 1849, making it one of the older fire departments in the state. A municipal department followed in 1891, the department moved from the City of Athens to Clarke County in January 1982, and it took its current name after city-county unification in January 1991.
Today the department runs nine engine companies, three ladder companies, and two rescue companies out of nine fire stations spread across the county, backed by a dedicated fire training facility on Paradise Boulevard dedicated in 1999. Firefighters work a 24-on/48-off schedule and respond to fire, EMS, hazardous materials, water and rope rescue, vehicle extrication, and search calls.
