About City Of Atlanta Fire Rescue Department

The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD) is an all-hazards emergency response organization protecting the residents, businesses, and visitors of Atlanta, Georgia. Its work is organized across five divisions: Support Services, Field Operations, Emergency Medical Services, Technical Services, and Airport Fire. AFRD is one of only nineteen departments in the country accredited by the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) while also maintaining an ISO Class 1 rating.

The department staffs 35 fire stations, including five located on the property of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and employs more than 1,100 sworn and civilian personnel. It covers roughly 132 square miles within the city limits and, in 2017, responded to over 100,000 calls for service. Beyond fire and EMS, AFRD protects more than 3,000 high-rise buildings, 23 miles of rapid rail, and 60 miles of interstate highway.

Atlanta's fire service traces its roots to the 1840s and 1850s, with Atlanta Fire Company No. 1 going into service in 1851 and a paid department established in 1882. Today the department also runs community programs including Safe Spots off the Streets (SPOTS), Senior Link, a Cadet Program, and fire safety and education outreach.

MissionThe Atlanta Fire Rescue Department provides prompt, quality services to our stakeholders that promote safety and well-being, enhance sustainability, and enrich the quality of life through professional development and dedication to service.
