Department careers page ↗Formed in 1983 through the consolidation of seven volunteer fire departments, four EMS units, and a civil defense organization, Fayette County Fire & EMS grew out of the community's response to a 1982 arson fire at the county courthouse. Today the department operates nine fire stations across the county with about 146 career employees working three 24-hour shifts, and it serves roughly 98,000 residents with an average response time of just over five minutes.
All of the department's firefighters are cross-trained as either Advanced EMTs or Paramedics, so fire engines carry full medical gear and are licensed as first-response medical units. Fayette County was an early innovator in this model and in Georgia EMS more broadly, becoming the first agency in the state to equip fire trucks with automatic defibrillators in 1985 and to adopt a statewide protocol for their use. The department runs seven ALS ambulances (plus two in reserve) alongside engines, quints, squads, tankers, and a heavy rescue truck, and recently completed rollout of full ALS ambulance coverage from all nine stations.
Beyond emergency response, the department serves as Fayette County's designated Emergency Management Agency and Homeland Security Agency, has been recognized twice by FEMA for its work, and runs its own in-house paramedic training program (under review for CoAEMSP accreditation) in partnership with Southern Crescent Technical College.
