Department careers page ↗Established in 1951, Rockdale County Fire Rescue is a full-service emergency response agency handling structural and wildland fires, emergency medical services, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescue, and natural disaster response for Rockdale County and the city of Conyers. The department answers over 11,000 calls a year and operates from ten stations plus a training annex, running a fleet that includes engines, quints, a ladder truck, a squad truck, a brush truck, a hazardous materials unit, and command vehicles. RCFR has improved its ISO Public Protection Classification to 2/2X.
The department is organized into Administration and Operations divisions, with specialized support teams including a bike medic team, SWAT medic, Honor Guard, and Peer Support team. Beyond emergency response, RCFR provides fire and life safety inspections, plan review, fire prevention education, pre-fire planning, technical and swift-water rescue, vehicle extrication, and brush fire suppression, with Station 8 housing a dedicated dive rescue unit.

Hiring process

- Physical exam performed by a physician
- Final interview with the Executive team, including the Fire Chief
Recruit school runs approximately 36 weeks in two phases: EMT training (basic EMT instruction, clinical rotations at stations/ambulances, culminating in RCFR final exam plus National Registry EMT written and practical exams), followed by firefighter training using the IFSTA "Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations" manual with daily physical training, leading to NPQ Firefighter 1, NPQ Firefighter 2, and NPQ Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations certification.
