About Rome-Floyd Fire Department

Rome-Floyd Fire Department traces its roots to a volunteer bucket brigade organized in 1850, formally incorporated the following year as the Oostanaula Fire Company, Number One, of the City of Rome. The department transitioned to a fully paid, career force on July 1, 1908, and by 1914 had become the second fully motorized fire department in Georgia, reflecting a long history of early adoption in the region.

Today RFD is a combined city-county agency covering the City of Rome and unincorporated Floyd County, with roughly 98,771 residents living across 514 square miles (about 30 city square miles and 484 county square miles). Ten fire stations are distributed across that footprint, staffed under a six-battalion command structure with a Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, two Division Chiefs, six Battalion Chiefs, thirty Captains, and 108 firefighters.

Crews run a fleet that includes ten engine companies, two 70-foot quints plus a reserve quint, a 110-foot aerial platform, squad units, a rescue boat, tenders/tankers, a heavy rescue unit, and a hazmat/decontamination unit. The department answers roughly 7,000 alarms a year and maintains over 3,200 fire hydrants alongside the city and county water systems, holding an ISO Class 2 rating in the city and Class 2X in the county.

MissionTo proudly protect lives, environment, and property of the citizens of Rome and Floyd County by providing prompt, skillful, cost-effective fire protection and life safety services.
