Savannah Fire Department

The Savannah Fire Department traces its roots to 1759, when the city organized its first fire company, and it holds the distinction of being the first fully-mechanized fire department in the United States. Today it is a career department staffed by more than 300 full-time, professional firefighters.

The department earned an ISO Class 1 (Class I) rating, the highest available, reflecting the quality of its firefighting capability and infrastructure. It serves the city of Savannah and supports regional and statewide response through its special operations resources.

Beyond structural firefighting, Savannah Fire maintains a robust Special Operations Division covering technical rescue, hazardous materials, marine firefighting, and dive response, and it hosts Georgia Search and Rescue Task Force 5, part of the state's USAR program.
