Department careers page ↗Pocatello Fire Department protects the largest city in southeast Idaho, tracing its roots to 1886 when the Oregon Short-line Bucket Brigade formed with 15 volunteers under Oliver L. Cleveland. What began as railroad-town volunteers has grown into a full-service career department operating five stations.
The department fields three front-line engines, a ladder, and three advanced-life-support ambulances, backed by reserve apparatus including an ARFF truck, hazmat vehicle, rescue truck, and tower platform. It has provided ambulance service for all of Bannock County since 1978.
Beyond city limits, Pocatello Fire carries an outsized regional role: it operates the Region 6 hazardous materials team covering an eight-county area of southeast Idaho, co-staffs a state urban search and rescue task force with Idaho Falls Fire, and runs the ARFF station at Pocatello Airport, the designated diversion airport for Salt Lake City.
MissionWe are dedicated to preserving life and property through prevention and professional, compassionate response.
Pocatello hires entry-level firefighters through a Civil Service process. Candidates first submit a Civil Service Exam Notification Form to be alerted to the exam, which is held annually each January and administered remotely by IPMA-HR with online proctors. A minimum score of 70% places you on a rank-ordered eligible register.
Applications are submitted through the City of Pocatello Employment Portal under "Probationary Firefighter." The candidate list is pulled the second week of November each year, and the register is used to hire firefighters for the following year. An optional study guide is available through Public Safety Compass.
