About Lockport Fire Protection District

Lockport Township Fire Protection District traces its roots to May 28, 1853, when the Village of Lockport appointed its first fire warden and adopted an early fire-prevention ordinance. The volunteer department was formally organized in 1895 after a catastrophic downtown fire destroyed a full city block, and it grew through the 20th century from hand carts and horse-drawn wagons into a modern, fully paid fire-rescue agency.

Today LTFPD operates out of six stations covering the City of Lockport, City of Crest Hill, Village of Romeoville, and surrounding unincorporated Will County, staffed by a sworn force of roughly 95 firefighter/paramedics. Every front-line firefighter carries Illinois Department of Public Health paramedic certification, reflecting the district's heavy EMS call load alongside structural fire response.

Beyond core fire and EMS response, the district fields four specialty teams: a Water Rescue & Recovery Team (dive, swiftwater, and ROV operations on the Des Plaines River, I&M Canal, and Sanitary and Ship Canal), a Hazardous Materials Team under the Southwest Hazmat Response Team (MABAS Divisions 19 and 22), a Fire Investigation Team, and a Technical Rescue Team trained in rope, confined-space, trench, and structural-collapse rescue. The department also maintains its own firefighters' museum documenting its 170-year history.

How to get hired

LTFPD is not currently accepting applications for the firefighter/paramedic position, though the district periodically posts openings for support roles (such as Emergency Vehicle Technician) and maintains a Fire Cadet Program as a pipeline into the department. Prospective firefighter/paramedic candidates are encouraged to review the district's 'Preparing for a Fire Service Career' guide and watch the Employment News page for the next hiring announcement.

The district's Cadet Program runs a 4-week Saturday orientation academy (4 hours/week) and can sponsor cadets through EMT, paramedic, and fire academy training as they progress toward a full-time position.
