Markham Fire Department protects the city of Markham, Illinois, a roughly seven-square-mile community along the Interstate 57 and Tri-State Tollway (I-294) corridors on Chicago's south side. The department responds to fire suppression, technical rescue, and emergency medical calls, and also runs public fire-safety education and prevention programs for residents.
The department traces its roots to 1925, when it began as an all-volunteer operation of 45 members working out of three stations. The city moved to a full-time, professional model in 1987 with the hiring of nine career firefighters who earned Fire-Fighter EMT-I certification, and in 1997 it discontinued its part-time firefighter program and outsourced ambulance transport, focusing its own crews on non-transport emergency medical response.
Today the department still operates three stations across the city, including its administrative headquarters, giving it coverage of both residential neighborhoods and the highway corridors that run through Markham.
