The department is led by a Fire Chief supported by two Deputy Chiefs and two civilian administrative staff, overseeing 60 sworn firefighters who work a 24/48 shift schedule beginning at 7:00 AM, with a minimum of 16 personnel on duty at all times across the department's five stations.
QFD operates as a basic life support, non-transport EMS agency with one advanced life support engine company, alongside fire suppression and specialized capabilities in vehicle extrication, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and water rescue. Prevention is a stated department priority, carried out through business inspections, hydrant testing, public fire and life-safety education, a juvenile firesetter counseling program, and free smoke-alarm installations through the statewide "Be Alarmed!" program.
Firefighter hiring and discipline are overseen by the City's Board of Police and Fire Commissioners. The department recognizes its members through internal Firefighter of the Year, Employee/Crew of the Month, and Leadership awards, and its volunteer program includes non-emergency roles such as secretarial support and a firefighter rehabilitation team that provides comfort and refreshment support to crews at extended incidents.

Where can I get information on burning regulations and burn permits?
Open burning, including leaf burning, is illegal in the City of Quincy, except for landscape waste grown on the property under a burn permit issued by the Quincy Fire Department. An application must be submitted at least seven days before the intended burn date, and the site is inspected for fuel type, extinguishment means, pile size (no more than 6 feet high or 24 feet in diameter), and a minimum 50-foot setback from structures.
My child has an unhealthy interest in fire. Does the department offer any programs to address this?
Yes, the Quincy Fire Department has a juvenile fire-setting counseling program. Interested residents can contact the department at 217-228-4459 for details.
What does it mean when a fire is called a "3rd" or "4th" alarm blaze?
Alarms are the department's way of telling dispatch how much help to send to a scene. A Still Alarm is one engine company; a General Alarm brings an incident commander and three engine companies; each additional alarm (2nd through 5th) calls in more off-duty engine companies, chief officers, and firefighters, up to recalling remaining personnel from both off-duty shifts on a 5th alarm.
What do I need to know about smoke and carbon monoxide alarms?
Illinois law and City ordinance require at least one functioning smoke alarm on each level of residential dwellings; carbon monoxide alarms are required in residences with gas-fueled appliances or an attached garage. The department participates in the "Be Alarmed!" program, which provides free smoke alarms and installation to at-risk homes; residents can call 217-228-4459 to schedule installation.
Does the Quincy Fire Department accept volunteers?
Yes. The department offers non-emergency volunteer opportunities such as secretarial support and service on its firefighter rehabilitation team, which assists on-duty firefighters with weather-dependent comfort services and beverages during extended incidents.
