About Springfield Fire Department

The Springfield Fire Department is dedicated to protecting lives and property through emergency response, fire prevention, and public safety education. Serving the residents of Springfield and surrounding Fire Protection Districts, the department responds to fires, medical emergencies, technical rescues, and hazardous material incidents, while also enforcing fire codes, conducting safety inspections, and investigating fire causes.

Operations are organized into three divisions. The Operations Division, the department's largest and most visible component, supervises frontline fire suppression, EMS, technical rescue, disaster response, and hazmat mitigation, along with vehicle/building maintenance and hydrant testing. The Division of Fire Safety oversees the Fire Prevention Bureau and Arson Bureau, handling code enforcement, plan review, public education, and fire-cause investigations, and coordinates with City Water, Light & Power on the city's fire-suppression water supply. The Division of Training and Education runs recruit academies and maintains training records and certifications in line with the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The department also runs community programs such as Safety City, a free hands-on safety event for incoming first-graders held each July in partnership with the Springfield Police Department, City Water Light and Power, Public Works, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
