Bloomington Fire Department

Bloomington Fire Department has served the city since it was established as a paid department in 1900, growing into the largest fully paid fire service in Monroe County. Today the department runs five stations staffed by 117 employees and holds an ISO Public Protection Classification of 1/1X, reflecting a high level of fire-suppression capability for the community it protects.

Beyond emergency response, BFD runs an active public-education program through its Fire Prevention Bureau, including preschool fire-safety visits, second-grade "Be Cool About Fire Safety" presentations in Monroe County Community School Corporation schools, National Fire Prevention Week outreach, workplace fire-safety training, and scheduled fire station tours for local youth organizations. The department also administers an open-burning permit program for the city and offers a pet-adoption fee waiver for households that lose a pet in a fire.

Personnel matters, including appointment, promotion, demotion, and dismissal, are governed by the City of Bloomington Fire Merit Commission, which sets merit-based policy for the department.
