Department careers page ↗Founded as a volunteer force in 1936, the Lawrence Fire Department has grown into a combination career department covering roughly 22 square miles of the City of Lawrence, a self-governing municipality inside Marion County near Indianapolis. Firefighters, represented by Professional Firefighters Local 416, work alongside a Civilian EMS Division to answer both fire and medical emergencies from five firehouses.
Every LFD firefighter is trained to the EMT level, and front-line engines and ambulances are staffed with Indiana-certified paramedics who deliver advanced life support under medical direction from IU Health Methodist Hospital. The department's Tac 38 tactical unit adds hazmat, rope rescue, and extrication capability to the standard engine and ladder fleet.
Beyond emergency response, LFD runs community safety programs, including annual fire-safety visits to first graders, smoke detector distribution drives, and coverage of Fort Harrison State Park with ATV-equipped crews.
MissionWith education, skill and training, our members are proud to serve our citizens of the City of Lawrence and those who travel through or visit every day.
