About City Of South Bend Indiana Fire Department

The South Bend Fire Department protects just over 103,000 residents across more than 42 square miles in northern Indiana, responding to roughly 24,000 calls a year. It is an ISO Class 1 department, the top possible fire-protection rating.

Founded on January 29, 1853 as two unpaid volunteer companies, the department became fully paid in 1887 and has grown into an organization of 256 full-time firefighters. Work is organized into four divisions: Training, Fire Prevention / Community Risk Reduction, Emergency Medical Services, and Services.

SBFD operates 11 engine companies, 4 ladder companies, 1 rescue unit, and 7 ALS ambulances out of 11 firehouses. Every member is trained in EMS, and the department's advanced life support ambulances are staffed by EMTs and paramedics.

The department describes itself as one of the finest in the Midwest and organizes its work around a set of core values: respect, integrity, accountability, professionalism, innovation, inclusion, empowerment, and excellence.
