About Greenwood Fire Department

The Greenwood Fire Department (GFD) is a full-time career department serving the City of Greenwood, Indiana, just south of Indianapolis. It is staffed by 87 full-time employees and 6 part-time employees operating out of four fire stations, with a fifth station slated to open in 2026.

GFD protects a 25-square-mile response area with a permanent resident population of more than 68,000, plus a large daytime visitor population drawn by the city's dense retail corridor, which includes Indiana's second-largest enclosed shopping mall. The department provides fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services, and hazardous materials response, and regularly assists five primary mutual aid partners.

Beyond core operations, GFD runs divisions for EMS, fire code enforcement and investigations, special operations, training, public education, an honor guard (five-time FDIC national champions), and chaplain/victim assistance.

MissionIt is the mission of the Greenwood Fire Department – through fire suppression, emergency medical services, special operations, disaster preparedness, fire prevention, and community education – to preserve the life and property of all who live in and visit the City of Greenwood.

How to get hired

Greenwood hires through periodic hiring processes rather than continuous open recruitment. The department invites interested candidates to call its Headquarters Office at 317.882.2599 to learn when the next hiring process opens.

New firefighters join a department that trains across three shifts at four firehouses and maintains EMT, Advanced EMT, and Paramedic certifications, so candidates should be prepared for ongoing fire and EMS training and certification once hired.
