Department careers page ↗Hobart Fire Department traces its roots to November 2, 1891, when residents organized a volunteer department after concluding that ad hoc bucket brigades could no longer protect the growing city. What began as a roughly 37-member volunteer roster with a hand pump has grown into a fully professional department operating three firehouses across the city.
Today the department protects a population of nearly 30,000 across 27 square miles of residential, light-industrial, and commercial area in Northwest Indiana, including a shopping-mall corridor and the Interstate 65 and US Route 30 corridors. All firefighters are cross-trained to provide Advanced Life Support ambulance service alongside fire suppression, so engines and ambulances are frequently dispatched together.
Beyond emergency response, the department runs public education programs including car-seat inspections, CPR/first-aid/Stop the Bleed training, station tours, and free blood-pressure checks at any firehouse, and it issues burn permits out of Firehouse 1.
MissionSetting the standard, serving with humility!
The City of Hobart does not maintain a standing fire department recruitment page; firefighter hiring is administered through the Hobart Fire Civil Service Commission, which sets rules and regulations, arranges entry-level and promotional tests, and maintains eligibility lists for vacancies.
