Department careers page ↗Vincennes Township Fire Department (VTFD) provides fire protection and emergency services across the Vincennes Township Fire Protection District in Knox County, Indiana, operating from four stations with a combination of career and volunteer firefighters. Beyond fire suppression, the department runs emergency medical services, auto extrication, hazardous materials response, dive and water rescue, ice rescue, and the Project Lifesaver at-risk tracking program, responding to more than 1,000 calls each year.
VTFD traces its roots to a 1961 dispute over the cost of the City of Vincennes's fire protection contract. When the city proposed raising its annual fee from $11,000 to $40,000, Township Trustee Marvin Westfall and resident David Simpson worked with the Indiana Fire Rating Board to stand up an independent township department instead, funded in part by community donations. The Vincennes Township Volunteer Fire Department went into service at midnight on December 31, 1961, with two full-time firemen and roughly 40 volunteers operating out of a single station.
Today the department's members log nearly 8,000 training hours a year, and several serve on state and regional emergency-services boards or teach at area fire academies. VTFD also runs community risk-reduction programs, including fire prevention education in schools, extinguisher training, Hands-Only CPR classes, and a smoke-alarm program with the American Red Cross.
MissionThe mission of the Vincennes Township Fire Department is to provide community safety and education, protect life, prevent loss and provide support and relief to those in need.
