Department careers page ↗White River Township Fire Department (WRTFD) provides all-hazards emergency response, advanced life support EMS, and mobile integrated healthcare across a 26-square-mile district in Johnson County, Indiana, serving more than 52,000 residents from four stations. The department responded to over 5,000 calls in 2025 and operates around the clock with roughly 25 firefighters and seven EMS professionals on duty across three 24-hour shifts.
WRTFD traces its roots to January 1, 1952, when the Smith's Valley Community Center was formed to meet a growing need for fire protection in the developing Smith's Valley area. The fire service split into the independent Smith Valley Volunteer Fire Department in 1953, then reorganized under its current name, White River Township Volunteer Fire Department, in 1956. For roughly three decades the department ran entirely on volunteers, funded through community fundraisers and township support, before the creation of the White River Township Fire Protection District in 1986 shifted it onto dedicated tax funding and set it on the path to becoming a full career department.
Today the department is governed by a five-member Board of Directors appointed by the Johnson County Commissioners and runs a Mobile Integrated Health program (Medic 5) alongside traditional fire and EMS response, plus public education efforts including CPR training and child car-seat safety checks.
