The Independence Fire/EMS Department protects the city of roughly 9,000 residents and a surrounding service area of about 15,000 in northeastern Montgomery County, Kansas. Its personnel run as cross-trained firefighter/EMTs, AEMTs, and paramedics, handling around 2,500 calls a year.
The department is fully combined: fire suppression and Advanced Life Support ambulance service merged into one unified agency in 2012, and it moved into a newly dedicated station building in 2023. Its fleet includes three engines, a 2019 Rosenbauer 101' aerial tower, a brush truck, and five ALS ambulances, along with hazmat and mass-casualty trailers.
With roots dating to 1876, it is a small full-time department organized across three shifts under a chief, three captains, and a line of firefighters. More than 340 people have served over its history.
