About Riley County Fire District #1

Riley County Fire District #1 (RCFD#1) is one of Kansas's largest consolidated volunteer fire departments, staffed by more than 130 volunteer firefighters operating out of 15 stations positioned across the county.

The district covers approximately 500 square miles, protecting unincorporated Riley County along with the communities of Leonardville, Ogden, and Randolph, and providing supplemental support to Manhattan and Riley. Riley County 911 handles emergency dispatch 24/7/365.

Crews respond to a broad mix of calls, including wildfires, brush fires, structure fires, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, road hazards, gas leaks, and other disasters. The department's volunteers come from all walks of life, from professional firefighters to farmers, soldiers, police officers, and retirees.

How to get hired

RCFD#1 recruits volunteers year-round across several roles: Firefighter, Fire Apparatus Operator, Medical Responder, and non-emergency Support Staff. Candidates must be at least 18, hold a valid driver's license and/or a GED or high school diploma, and pass a background check; the expected time commitment is about 2-4 hours per month. No prior public service experience is required. Medical Responder roles require KSBEMS certification (EMR, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic).
